If you are anything like me (Rachel), you woke up today and spent the entirety of your 50 minute D train ride being really disappointed in yourself for STILL not being over that stupid Adele song while mulling over the fact that you haven’t purchased a single Christmas present, and then you felt even worse because people (your mom) keep(s) texting you things like “santa is really going out of his way this year” and “we got your brother a blow torch, try 2 beat that ;)”, and then you eat the scone crumbs out of your scarf and cry because you are a terrible child/friend/sibling.

But then you have coffee and realize everything isn’t so bad! You still have time to save Christmas! There are so many gifting options available to you, all within the Zeitgeist DVD store, and all at a 40% discount UNTIL SUNDAY (this Sunday, the 18th).
I’ve overwhelmed you, I can tell. Here, take a moment.

Opposite effect? I’m sorry. Here, new tactic. Choice can be scary. The Zeitgeist catalog is so expansive! Hence, I’ve narrowed down a list of five films/box sets for five archetypal family members and/or friends. They’ve been chosen in part because of their inherent awesomeness, and in part because they are some of our normally more expensive items - making it all the more beneficial for you to take advantage of this sale!
Here we go.
For the Film Nerd
The Man from London
dir. Béla Tarr

Not only is the film directed by Béla Tarr; it also co-stars everyone’s favorite indie forest sprite, (do I even have to say it?) Tilda Swinton. Dark and existential, it’s the perfect choice for that person you know who’s too deep to acknowlege happiness.
For the Collector
Journeys from Berlin/1971
dir. Yvonne Rainer
Our collection of Yvonne Rainer’s films is trés exclusif (French for: “the best thing ever that basically no one has but everyone wants”). They’re archival versions, not available in stores, so you can say things like “They don’t even make these anymore,” and people will think you are in some fantastic Tom Cruise circle of secret DVDs. Everyone wins.
For the History Buff
dir. Sue Williams, co-produced by Kathryn Dietz
If you have a history buff in your life, there’s a good chance that literally every other person in that person’s life has already bought them Band of Brothers. So no, it’s not a good idea. Same with Saving Private Ryan. Your grandpa must own 18 copies of each Spielberg miniseries by now. Expand their knowledge! There are other places that aren’t Europe… and this three-disc series will take you to one of them.
Disc 1: China in Revolution (1911-1949)
Disc 2: The Mao Years (1949-1976)
Disc 3: Born Under the Red Flag (1976-1997)
And you get the added bonus of supporting films by women! You are such a winner. What a good friend. Kristen Wiig just smiled.
For the Wannabe-Sommelier
dir. Jonathan Nossiter
(from the Kimstim Collection)
Ten hours, all about wine. No, it’s not insensitive for you to get it for the aunt who always gets drunk and yells at your grandma in front of everyone. On the contrary, it shows you’re paying attention. Plus, you can always play dumb and say you picked it out because, “I remember you really liking that Paul Giamatti movie…”
For the Art Lover
dir. Derek Jarman
More Tilda! For the cousin your mom describes as “free spirited”, or the friend who’s always dragging you to museums - “You need more culture!” - Derek Jarman’s films are gorgeously composed and hypnotic, and did we mention Tilda Swinton is in (some of) them? (See our
earlier post for more on the mustache-tastic
Caravaggio). This set comes with almost as many bonus features as the
Lord of the Rings sets that came with bookends or statues or NO WE TOTALLY DON’T OWN THEM OR SPEAK ELVISH SO STOP JUDGING ALREADY. Also, you literally
cannot buy another thing from the MoMA Store.
