the spirit of the times
Metacritic created some fancy system for ranking directors, and put that system to use, ranking the best directors since 2000 (they also made a list of the worst directors since 2000).
Now, we love judging, but love it even more when someone does the judging for us. Even MORE than either of those things, we love when judgey people like the things we like. It’s validating, okay?
So imagine our sheer joy upon seeing that our dear friend Guy Maddin was ranked THIRD on that Metacritic list!

You can click the link above for the full list, but here’s the copy on Guy:
Whether they are ballet-filled takes on the Dracula story, or psuedo- autobiographical tales of growing up in Winnipeg, Guy Maddin movies might be an acquired taste (and that acquisition will be helped if you are predisposed to liking surreal, hyper-stylized, black-and-white, silent melodramas), but critics continue to reward them with stellar reviews, and we can guarantee you won’t see anything like them from any other director. Next up for the Canadian filmmaker is the crime drama Keyhole, which follows a gangster (Jason Patric) on a Ulysses-like odyssey … through the rooms of a house.
His bio is up on our site, as are write-ups and links to a few of his films (on the left once you click through).
One DVD you should make sure to check out is Archangel (also available in theQuintessential Guy Maddin Collection) -

especially since it features Maddin’s lauded short, The Heart of the World (created for the Toronto International Film Festival).
We leave you with this (from Maddin’s My Winnipeg, kind of):
