the spirit of the times
Back in November of 1998, we celebrated the 10th anniversary of Zeitgeist Films with a weekend-long retrospective of films at the American Museum of the Moving Image. We invited some of our favorite directors to introduce some of our signature films, and Guy Maddin graciously agreed to introduce Jacques Demy’s Umbrellas of Cherbourg.
As part of Fandor’s Guy Maddin blog-a-thon we thought we’d reproduce this excerpt from Guy’s diaries (we were not snooping! It was published in 2003 as part of From the Atelier Tover: Selected Writings) which covers his visit to New York that weekend, the Umbrellas screening, and the ensuing 10th anniversary party.
(Parts have been redacted to make this safe for work, and to protect the innocent. You’ll have to buy the book—which we highly recommend!—if you want the whole scoop).
